The movie manages in four and a half minutes to cover an impressive story arc that resolves itself beautifully in the final scene. It does a great job of capturing the inventiveness of Coupland’s work and its darkly comic tone as well as the mindset of a world that reads as twisted and over the top on the surface but that boils down in the end to the basic human emotions.

JPod centers on Ethan’s stunted but sincere efforts to win the amorous attentions of “the new girl” Kaitin Boyce, an unwilling recruit to the survival cult of video game programmers, themselves thrown together in gray cubby-holed work-spaces by virtue of last-name bureaucratic alphabetized efficiency. Ethan’s peculiar attempts in courtship ultimately win him the battle, if not the war. Consummated by a gesture that is the epitome of modern love, Ethan inculcates Kaitlin into the amoral morass that is JPod.
ABOUT THE WRITER:
Bruce is a seasoned actor, screenwriter, story editor, film and stage director who has worked in the entertainment industry in Canada for over 25 years without ever waiting on one table. At the Second City he wrote and performed in six original shows and directed seven others. Bruce has also written, directed and/or performed in: SCTV, SUPERTOWN CHALLENGE, THE FIFTH QUADRANT and the feature film, DUCT TAPE FOREVER. For seven years he was a senior writer and talent director on THE RED GREEN SHOW. He has been nominated for several Dora Mavor Moore Toronto theatre awards and twice been nominated for a Gemini for Best Comedy Writing for Television.

JPod’s universe is amoral and shameless. The characters are products of their era even as they’re creating it. Everybody in Ethan’s life inhabits a moral grey zone. Nobody is exempt, not even his seemingly straitlaced parents or Coupland himself, as readers will see.
